The first thing you'll want to do before printing out these mermaid coloring pages for your kids is read Melanie Hope Greenberg's iconic book, Mermaids on Parade!
Mermaids on Parade is a colorfully illustrated picture book that tells the story of a young girl's excitement and anticipation while getting ready to participate in the Brooklyn's annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade.
Down at the boardwalk, she observes the gaiety and festivities of parade participants dressed up in sparkles and mermaid tails. Mermaids on Parade is a wonderful book that celebrates and wonderful start-of-summer tradition.

Print and color: Mermaid Paper Dolls
After reading Mermaids on Parade, your kids will want to act out all the scenes and then invent their own! These Queen of the Sea and King Neptune paper dolls are waiting for a rainbow of colors and eager to don their tails and crowns to get ready for the summer solstice celebration and parade.

Your kids don't need an Ariel coloring page to tell them a story. There's definitely a very interesting story behind this Statue of Liberty mermaid. The question is, what is that story? Did the mermaid become a statue or did the statue become a mermaid? And does the torch work under water?
While they color in or out of the lines with whatever colors they choose (no judgement, here!) kids will certainly use their imagination to invent a fascinating tale (or tail?) for you!
Cut, color and read: Mermaid Bookmarks
These adorable mermaid bookmarks to color include four different scenes, three are line art details from the book, and a fourth features the mermaid postage stamps we didn't know we needed. Obviously your kids will want to use these bookmarks to mark their stopping point in the latest mermaid book they've picked up!

One of the best things about mermaids is that, being magical and mythical, they can be whatever you want them to be, hence this giant mermaid with a cityscape, complete with NYC subway train, nestled in her tail.
Coloring page is available for free here: Mermaid Parade
You can almost hear the music and laughter rising from the joyous summer celebration on this coloring page straight from Melanie's book, Mermaids on Parade. Your kids will want to get dressed up and dance their way to the ocean front after they finish coloring the page.

One of the fun traditions of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade is when Queen Mermaid and King Neptune march down the boardwalk to the ocean and officially open the beach by tossing fruit into the waves. Sound weird, but wonderful, yes? Melanie depicted this event in her book and now your kids can color it in. But maybe encourage your kids to eat their fruit snack, rather than toss it around the dining room, yes?
Check it out here: Mermaid Tail Craft
And finally, make your own mermaid tail, no sewing required! Use the coloring page to craft a mini-tail for a doll (or action figure) or grab a large roll of paper to use the pattern to create a life-sized tail. Scales, glitter, seaweed and shells are optional but encouraged!
