Are you ready for the summer solstice? How about a summer solstice coloring page as part of our monthly coloring page series?
The very famous Coney Island Mermaid Day Parade is the subject of Melanie Hope Greenberg's award winning book, Mermaids on Parade and this month's summer solstice coloring page is a scene from that book.
Melanie explains,
At the Mermaid Parade the chosen King and Queen of that year are given a basket of fruit to throw to the Sea Gods and Goddess and open the ocean for the summer with a good season of swimming.
Sounds like a crazy fun time, right? Well, if you can't make it to Coney Island this year, you CAN experience the fun vicariously with Melanie's fruit in the waves summer solstice coloring page.

Pretend play idea:
Print out the ocean coloring page and stack this solstice coloring page on top so that you create an ocean backdrop (under and over the waves). Just follow the instructions for creating an easy theater backdrop in the ocean coloring page post. Then use the fish puppets that come with the ocean page and the Melanie's mermaid paper dolls for awesome summer beach themed pretend play.
