You can use the book as a backdrop for mermaid paper doll pretend play! Kids can walk (or swim) their dolls along the Coney Island map in the book!
How to Make Mermaid Paper Dolls
Print the mermaid dolls on card stock for a sturdy dolls and paper costumes.
Next, color the dolls with crayons, markers or coloring pencils.
Cut out the paper dolls, being careful around the tabs on the costumes. Now it's time to play!

Mermaids on Parade is Melanie's signature book about a girl attending her first Mermaid Parade in Coney Island, Brooklyn. The Mermaid Parade is an annual costume parade that has taken place every June since 1983. Crowds of New Yorkers, young and old, dress up as sea creatures, both real and imaginary, march along the boardwalk and throw fruit into the sea. (Hey, every carnival has its quirks.)
Mermaids on Parade is an iconic NYC book. (It was also a Cool Mom Pick, a Red Tricycle Perfect Picture Book, one of Bank Street College of Education’s 2009 Best Books of the Year, and a PBS Summer Reading pick, so I'm not just whistling Dixie.)
