Welcome to a mermaid celebration of the ages! Every year in June, Coney Island in Brooklyn hosts the Mermaid Parade, "a celebration of ancient mythology and honky-tonk rituals of the seaside" and we have a fabulous mermaid parade coloring page to go with it.
If you're not familiar with the Mermaid Parade, it's truly a parade for everyone!
Unlike most parades, this one has no ethnic, religious, or commercial aims. It’s a major New York holiday invented by artists! An American version of the summer-solstice celebration, it takes pride of place with West African Water Festivals and Ancient Greek and Roman street theater. It's features participants dressed in hand-made costumes based on themes and categories set by us. This creates an artistic framework on which artists can improvise, resulting in the flourishing of frivolity, dedication, pride, and personal vision that has become how New York celebrates summer.

Followers of this blog will no doubt be familiar with Melanie Hope Greenberg's iconic children's book that shares the Mermaid parade festivities with young readers. Her story of a girl preparing for the parade appeals to children who look forward with excitement and nervousness to big public events.
To celebrate the annual Mermaid Parade this month, Melanie has created a special mermaid parade coloring page just for you. It features a jubilant scene from her book in which festival-goers frolic, dance and make merry on Coney Island.
