How are you doing so far this summer? Do you need a few coloring pages for an on-the-go busy bag? Pack a box of crayons, some blank sheets of paper and this space alien coloring page from children's book author and illustrator, Melanie Hope Greenberg.
Use the UFO coloring page to start a conversation with your kids about the possibility of life in outer space, or use it as an activity while you wait for sun to set so you can gaze up at the stars on a warm summer night.

This month's coloring page is based on an illustration in Supermarket, by Kathleen Krull and illustrated by Melanie Hope Greenberg. If you want to know what space aliens have to do with supermarkets, you'll just have to read the book.
Supermarket is available at your library, or as an ebook through Epic books, an ebook app I highly recommend!
I always like to encourage my readers to combine the coloring page with an activity. Since summer is a great time for lying in the grass and staring up at the night sky, put together a star gazing busy bag.
Star gazing busy bag:
- Space alien coloring page
- Campfire coloring page (check out how this illustration inspired an awesome conversation!)
- Glitter Crayons
- Glow in the dark stickers
- Blank journal or paper
- Glow-in-the-Dark field guide for young stargazers
You'd never think that coloring pages would be a controversial topic, but they are! (I know!) I, myself, used to think coloring pages were not such a good idea. After seeing how coloring pages have actually inspired my art-resistant child, I changed my mind and I enjoy giving him our monthly coloring page. Cathy over at NurtureStore wrote a great article about why coloring pages can be included in any child's "art diet."

Meet the illustrator:
Melanie Hope Greenberg is an award winning author and illustrator of more than 15 children’s books. Her cheerful, vibrant illustrations can be found in books such as Good Morning, Digger, Down in the Subway and A City Is. Her very popular Mermaids on Parade was selected as a Bank Street Best Book, and for the Texas Reading Club and PBS Kids Summer Reading Lists.
The illustration that inspired Melanie's space alien coloring page came from the book, Supermarket. The original painting was raffled off at a Texas Library Association event in 2011.
Melanie also visits schools to talk about the process of creating a book.
I’m sure you know a kid who likes diggers. Or mermaids? Or subways?
