Game of the Month: Gobblet!

Gobblet! is today's Game of the Month recommendation. I bought this for the boys last year, and although we played it a lot in the beginning, it sat in the game closet for a few months until a few weeks ago. I'm not sure why we forgot about it, but it's always a nice surprise to rediscover a favorite game.

If you are not familiar with Gobblet, it is a strategy game that is a bit like an advanced version of Tic Tac Toe. Blue Orange Games is one of my favorite game companies because so many of their games are wooden, instead of cheap-o plastic. Playing this game is a nice sensory experience! Blue Orange has also been given the "Green Toy Company Award" by Dr. Toy.

Gobblet Rules and Skills:

• The object of the game is to get 4 in a row using sets of nested pieces. Each player has 3 sets of 4 nesting cylinders. Players take turns either placing a gobblet on the board, moving a gobblet already on the board, or "gobbling" up an opponent's gobblet by placing a large gobblet over a smaller one. (Try saying "gobblet" three times fast.)
• The game is great for exercising strategy skills and getting kids to practice thinking ahead.
• Memory skills are very important! Players must remember which small gobblers are sitting under larger gobblers, or they can inadvertently give the advantage to their opponent!

Tips for Playing Gobblet with Kids:

• Gobblet is recommended for kids ages 7 and up. I agree with this because my almost 6 year old needs a lot of direction when we play. He and I always need to team up. It's a much smoother game when I play solo with my older son.
• Blue Orange makes a junior version called, Gobblet Gobblers. (see photo below) It's more colorful and has silly faces, but the main difference is that it is a 3-in-a-row game, not 4-in-a-row. There are only 2 sets of 3 nesting cylinders. It is recommended for ages 5 and up.
