I love to repurpose games as quick distractions for my toddler. If you have the game of Boggle in your closet, by all means bring it out. It is one of my son's favorite manipulatives.
You might not think that a game meant for older children and adults can be just as fun for toddlers and preschoolers! And, just so you know, I'm not using Boggle to try and teach my toddler how to spell!
Mostly I let him explore the game pieces on his own. He loves to put the blocks in the squares (and dump them out!). He is working his fine motor skills and I love to see his concentration and patience!
Putting the blocks in the squares also builds math understanding through one to one correspondence.
If you wanted to do a little directed learning you could easily name each letter as your child places it in the game board. But no need to go overboard. I know that by simply playing with letter blocks, my son is building a strong foundation for literacy.
So next time your toddler or preschooler reaches for a game that says "ages 10 and up", consider that "playing" it, he may actually be building math, literacy and motor skills!
Boggles your mind, doesn't it? (I had to get that pun in there somewhere!)
