How do you encourage kids to read over the summer? Some kids pick up a book whenever they have a spare moment. Other kids need a little motivation. Whatever their reading style, every kid loves a good game or challenge, which means that reading bingo is the perfect summer reading activity!

two summer reading bingo cards for kids

We have three versions of reading bingo for kids with free, printable BINGO cards. Use the form at the end of the post, titled "Get the Reading Bingo Cards" to enter your email and get the pdf.

Summer Literacy BINGO

The first bingo card covers a wide range of summer literacy activities in addition to reading books.

Bingo squares prompt kids to complete a variety of literacy related takes. Examples include writing a poem, learning new vocabulary and singing songs.

Book Genre BINGO

The second reading bingo card is a genre-based reading challenge which encourages kids to read a wide variety of books in different genres and themes.

This bingo game will get kids reading outside of their comfort zone. Reading prompts include genres like mysteries, realism, nonfiction, and even books from particular eras in history.

Lucky you, the genre-based book bingo game can be completed using our book lists! Find the index of all our lists here: Master Book List of Lists!

Read around the World BINGO

Each square of Read-around-the-World prompts kids to find a book set in a specific country. Several squares are more open ended, and allow them to choose a book set in any country in a particular geographic location. For example, "a book set in an African country." The middle square allows children to choose a book set in their home country!

The following lists may come in handy when looking for read-around-the-world bingo books:

Summer BINGO Tips

The goal of each reading bingo challenge is the same: complete the challenges in enough squares to reach five in a row and BINGO! Feel free to offer up a prize at the end, if your child needs some extra motivation. Maybe a day out at the arcade, or a double scoop ice cream cone or..... perhaps a gift certificate to your local, independent bookstore? (I'd choose that last one, myself.)

stack of books and summer reading bingo card

Fill out the form below and both BINGO cards will magically appear in your inbox so your kids don't have to waste any time getting started!

NOTE: reading should NEVER EVER EVER feel like a chore. Use these bingo cards wisely. If a child doesn't want to complete them in the traditional way, or wants to abandon them altogether, that's okay! Find a gentle solution that works for your child.

** The first two bingo cards contain an #ownvoices book square. Just after I wrote this post, We Need Diverse Books came out with a statement as to why they are retiring this term. Going forward, I will be following their example.

I had a hard time choosing between these two books, and so... I didn't! As a kid growing up in California, the summertime experiences in these two books were completely foreign but utterly beguiling. Get your kids daydreaming about lazy summer days free of digital screens and ringing phones. These two books are must-reads for summer. Sure, they are long, but you've got lazy summer days to fill.

The World Belonged to Us picture book

THE WORLD BELONGED TO US by Jacqueline Woodson, illustrated by Leo Espinosa

I love this joyous book about the pleasures of an old fashioned summer in the city. Fire hydrants spray water in the streets, kids play tag, jump rope, and get treats from the ice cream truck. Set in the 60s or 70s in Brooklyn, the bouncing refrain and the smiles on the children's faces are pure delight.

Hot Dog summer picture book

HOT DOG by Doug Salati

Find it: Amazon | Bookshop

Look, I'm not a dog person so I wasn't sure that I was going to enjoy this book as much as the hype assured me I would. The hype was right! Anyone can relate to the dog's need to get away from the noisy, crowded and sweltering city streets in summer for a day and head to the beach. Readers will feel a visceral relief as the "hot dog" makes it to the breezy seaside.

A Beach Tail book

A BEACH TAIL by Karen Lynn Williams, illustrated by Floyd Cooper

Find it: Amazon | Bookshop

At the beach, Gregory draws a lion in the sand. His dad tells him to stay near the lion and not to venture into the water. Gregory picks up a stick and begins to draw the lion's tail... a very long tail, right on down the beach. When he realizes he has gone too far his finds his way back by traveling the length of the line in the sand. I like the way the story maintains a balance between natural curiosity, wonder and exploration and the trepidation that a child feels when he realizes he may almost have gone too far for comfort. It's a lovely glimpse of an important childhood moment.

If You Want to See a Whale book cover

IF YOU WANT TO SEE A WHALE by Julie Fogliano, illustrated by Erin E. Stead

Here's a lovely story about the rewards of patience, imagination, being in the moment, and close observations of one's surroundings — all key qualities of a summer well-spent. This is the perfect summer book to relax with at a picnic in the park.

Ah, summer! The perfect time to spend an afternoon with a good book, especially one that the whole family can enjoy. These summer read alouds and the perfect books for everyone!

You'll meet quirky characters, hear heartwarming stories, listen to summer adventures and sometimes even grip your picnic blanket in suspense.

Collage of summer read alouds book covers

I've organized the books in a rough order by read aloud age lowest to highest. Books were selected because I believe they all have something to offer listeners at every age level. If you're reading to preschoolers on up, choose a book from the first half of the list, if you're reading to 3rd grade and up, choose any book from the list, noting that the most advanced read alouds are near the end.

Our Friend Hedgehog book cover

OUR FRIEND HEDGEHOG: THE STORY OF US by Lauren Castillo

What a marvelous book! I have long admired Castillo's illustrations and this gentle chapter book is perfect for kids who like cozy and gentle reads. A storm carries away Hedgehog's stuffed toy dog, Mutty, leaving Hedgehog feeling lonely. She sets out to find Mutty, following clues that lead her to encounters with other friendly animals who help her. Eventually all the creatures meet a human, Annika May, who has lost something of her own. All the animals have charmingly distinctive personalities. With full color illustrations, Castillo's book is also a great read aloud for young children.

GOOSEBERRY PARK AND THE MASTER PLAN (series) by Cynthia Rylant, illustrated by Arthur Howard

Find it: Amazon | Bookshop

This is the first book in an early chapter book series which is a companion to the original Gooseberry Park novel. If all your kids are over six, I recommend the original Gooseberry Park. We adored both books. In this title, the colorful cast of animal characters band together during a drought and come up with a plan that involves a cat, a possum, a raccoon, 200 owls, and 20 packs of chewing gum.

First published in 1937, this title will appeal to fans of books like Wind in the Willows and the Thornton Burgess animal stories, but anyone who loves gentle quirky humor and animal stories will enjoy it. A lobster's curiosity about the world prompts him to leave the ocean in search of knowledge. His adventure begins when he risks the perils of dry land and makes friends with Badger. I am so delighted to have discovered this book! It's the perfect old-fashioned read aloud for summer and the content is appropriate for any age who is ready to sit down and listen to a chapter book.

Ragweed book cover

RAGWEED (Poppy series) by Avi

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

If you want to fill your library bag with great summer read alouds, pick a quality series! We loved Avi's very popular Tales from Dimwood Forest series about a mouse and other woodland creatures. Our first read was Ragweed, about an adventurous mouse who sets out to see the world, meets some cool mice living the good life except for the occasional encounter with a tricky kitty. It was huge hit, (see it on my list of chapter books to read to 4-6 year olds) especially with my then-4 year old who started constantly interrupting conversations throughout the day to tell me "Silversides [the cat] needs to go to jail!" You will be enchanted by the whole series.

saucy book cover with pig

SAUCY by Cynthia Kadohata, illustrated by Marianna Raskin

Find it: Amazon | Bookshop

Becca and her three brothers are quadruplets. One day, Becca finds a tiny, mangy little pig and convinces her parents to let her bring it home. Once the family learns from the vet that the pig will eventually be 600 pounds, they agree to allow the pig to stay until it reaches 100, or "maybe 50-60," as her mother warns. As Becca learns to take care of the pig, she also reflects upon some of the choices she has made in life, especially in regards to a friend she feels she has let down. One of the children has cerebral palsy, adding an additional human detail to the family. This is a great family story and Kadohata's narration is superb, as always.

Moominsummer Madness book cover

MOOMINSUMMER MADNESS by Tove Jansson

Who doesn't love the Moomins? These classic characters created by Finnish author and illustrator Tove Jansson will warm your heart and tickle your funny bone. One summer after a flood in Moominvalley, the Moomin family take shelter in a floating building that turns out to be a theater! (What could be better?) The plot is full of quirky characters, serendipitous run-ins, and good old-fashioned fun.

The Adventures of Nanny Piggins book cover

THE ADVENTURES OF NANNY PIGGINS (series) by R. A. Spratt

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Nanny Piggins is one of the funniest books we've ever read. This Australian import is a series about three siblings whose father is so frugal he hires a pig to take care of them. Nanny Piggins is no Mary Poppins, however.  The enthusiastic circus pig thinks school is overrated, chocolate is a food group and takes the kids on riotous adventures. This is a great book for kids (and adults) who enjoy over-the-top, subversive humor and plain, good fun. If you prefer moral didacticism, move on.

They meet a musically talented boy who lives in the "big house" whose mother isn't so sure she approves of his new frieds. nearby. This is a wonderfully quirky book and my 10 year old absolutely loved listening to me read it aloud. Cousins Otto and Sheed live in a Virginia county known for strange happenings. Together they have worked to solve many mysteries but now it's the last day before school starts and they are not ready for summer to be over. They encounter a mysterious man with a camera that stops time and that's when the weirdness really begins! Zany, imaginative, not-a-little-bit-surreal, yet still thoughtful.

In 1968, 11-year-old Delphine and her sisters travel from New York to Oakland to stay with the mother who abandoned them seven years earlier.  Their mother, who is not exactly happy to host them, enrolls them in a day care run by the Black Panthers. Williams-Garcia's writing is splendid, with interesting characters. It was a hard-to-put-down kind of book and a great non-preachy story to show kids how politics infuses daily regular life.

Temple Alley Summer book cover

TEMPLE ALLEY SUMMER by Sachiko Kashiwaba

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Originally published in Japan, Kashiwaba's novel is part summer adventure, part ghost story (not scary at all), part friendship tale. One night, Kazu sees a girl he's never seen before leaving an altar room. The same girl appears at school the next day and everyone but Kazu remembers her and insists she's always been a classmate. Kazu decides to do his summer project on Kimyō Temple Alley, which has links to ghosts and stories about the dead coming back to life. He befriends the mystery girl, Akari, and meets some of the older residents of the neighborhood who help him with his quest to solve the mystery of the alley. A suspenseful story that will introduce families to a fascinating world.

Don't forget to get your summer reading bookmark coloring page! It's a great quiet activity for kids to do while they listen to you read aloud.

It's fair to say teenagers prefer to chose their own books. This is understandable. When I was headed off to high school as a freshman, I wouldn't have wanted my mom to hand me a 9th grade summer reading list! Nevertheless, I compiled one anyway, ha ha ha!

If you've already been looking for a list of good books for 9th graders you've probably noticed that high school summer reading lists focus either on classics or dystopian fiction. These recommended summer reading books for 14-15 year olds are different than the usual fare!

9th grade summer reading book list for 13-15 year olds entering high school.

You might find that during the teen years, kids spend a less time with a book and a little more time hanging out with their friends, or looking at their phone. Nevertheless, reading continues to be associated with academic benefits, an increase in curiosity about the world, compassion for others, not to mention, stress relief!

That's why it's especially important for teens to have access to a wide variety of books so they can continue to expand their horizons and feed their imaginations.

Most of these books are considered YA (Young Adult), and if subject matter is a concern to you, I encourage you to look at the books yourself, first. I don't try to be a gatekeeper for my teen's reading, but not every parent is the same.

Set in 1939 Germany it tells the tale of Liesel Meminger, who has lost her family comes to Munich to live with a foster family. The story is narrated by Death. Samurai Rising book cover

SAMURAI RISING: THE EPIC LIFE OF MINAMOTO YOSHITSUNE by Pamela S. Turner, illustrated by Gareth Hinds

This is a gripping biography, but I won't lie, there are A LOT of people who die unnatural deaths. Minamoto Yoshitsune was a 12th century samurai warrior who, after the murder of his father, grows up amongst the monks at Kurama Temple. With stunning grit and daring ingenuity Yoshitsune eventually becomes a warrior who is both admired and feared. Yes, there are a lot of gruesome details in this book, so perhaps it is not for sensitive souls. However, if you have a teen who loves Japanese or military history, this is a stirring narrative.

In fact, I bet parents will want to read this book themselves!

This is a nonfiction book about one of America's great athletes. Many teens may not yet be familiar with some of America's more shameful policies of the past, such as the forced "reeducation" of Native Americans into white schools. Sheinkin's book introduces kids to Jim Thorpe's fascinating life and career without sugar coating the governments attempt to erase Indigenous culture. Highly recommended, especially for teens headed into high school with the intention of playing on a sports team!

I could not put this book down! When Jo Kuan is fired from her job at a milliner's she gets work as a lady's maid to a cruel mistress. But when Jo writes an anonymous advice column titled "Dear Miss Sweetie," she challenges the prejudiced views of society. Society is not ready for her, however, and there is a backlash which sends her on a new journey of discovery about her past. Excellent!

Pirate Queen graphic novel book cover

PIRATE QUEEN: THE LEGEND OF GRACE O'MALLEY by Tony Lee

Yelchin's illustrated, semi-autobiographical novel about growing up in the USSR is hilarious. Yevgeny’s ballet-obsessed mother wants him to be a dancer like her beloved Baryshnikov. Little does she know that Yevgeny spends his evenings drawing on the underside of the dining room table. Yevgeny’s Jewish family lives in such a small apartment that, as the youngest, he sleeps under the table. The discovery of Yevgney's talent provides the family with some hope. Yelchin's writing and illustrations masterfully walk the line between tragedy and comedy. Very enjoyable!

History Smashers: Women's Right to Vote book cover

WOMEN'S RIGHT TO VOTE (History Smashers series) by Kate Messner, illustrated by Dylan Meconis

Highly recommended.

The Great Chicago Fire history comic book cover

THE GREAT CHICAGO FIRE (History Comics series) by Kate Hannigan, illustrated by Alex Graudins

Find it: Amazon | Bookshop

Graphic novels are a great way to make history come alive. Boring date memorization can't hold a candle to exciting illustrations and witty asides housed in speech bubbles. Hannigan tells the story of the Chicago fire of 1871 through the eyes of a brother and sister trying to escape the flames. The duo then reappear at the World's Fair in 1893, showing the recovery of the city. I especially appreciated the way Hannigan weaves insightful commentary into the narrative.

Rocket to the Moon book cover

ROCKET TO THE MOON! (Big Ideas that Changed the World series) by Don Brown

Find it: Amazon | Bookshop

I love that Brown wrote a graphic novel about the Apollo 11 mission because my younger son is not very interested in science, but because he adores graphic novels and comics he read this book several times. Brown is an experienced author of historical fiction for children and this is a wonderful book to read in celebration of the anniversary of the moon landing.

Also read in the same series: A Shot in the Arm!, and Machines that Think.

Take a class of first graders and you will find a wide spread of reading abilities and reading levels. This 1st grade summer reading list of books takes that into consideration! Find easy reader books for beginning readers, as well as very easy chapter books for those ready to read books with more text and (slightly) fewer illustrations.

Collage of 1st grade summer reading books

Kids become readers when they are allowed to choose the right book that speaks to their interests. Therefore, this summer reading list includes funny books, superheroes, animal stories, nonfiction, sports tales and more. Once you head to the library to search for these books for emerging readers you'll find lots more.

As a parent, I did not restrict my kids to specific leveled books. Summer is a time to explore all kinds of books, no matter what the reading level! But if you have concerns, talk to your child's classroom teacher or school literacy specialist.

Since 6-7 year olds (first grade) read at different levels these summer reading lists will also be helpful:

Easy Readers

Fox the Tiger book cover

FOX THE TIGER (series) by Corey R. Tabor

This is a giggle-inducing story about a mischievous fox who admires tigers so much he wants to be one. After all, tigers are big, fast, sneaky and "the best." So what does he do? Why he gives himself stripes, of course! Your kids will love the whole Fox series.

Good Night Owl book cover

GOOD NIGHT OWL, or anything by Greg Pizzoli

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

This is a very cute book about an owl who wants to get to bed, but can't because of noises in the night. I love all of Pizzoli's early readers, and they even make fun and simple read alouds, which is not an easy feat for easy reader book!

MORE: Hilarious easy reader books

What is Chasing Duck? book cover

THE GIGGLE GANG series by Jan Thomas

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

I was so excited to learn that my favorite story time author has a funny early readers series! If you have never read a Jan Thomas book, you are in for a real treat and if your child is still reluctant, pick up one of her picture books to read aloud. Your child will laugh so hard he or she will want to make sure not to miss the giggles in the early reader books, too.

Big Cat 1st grade summer reading book cover

BIG CAT, or anything by Ethan Long

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

I had a hard time singling out one title by Long. He has several in the "I Like to Read" series, and they are all funny early readers. They are all truly easy to read, too! Getting kids who may not want to read but are at the stage where reading ability is starting to emerge are helped along by humor and this book stands out.

Don't Throw It to Mo book cover

DON'T THROW IT TO MO (series) by David A. Adler, illustrated by Sam Ricks

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

I found this series charming. Mo loves sports but he's not necessarily the most talented kid on the team. It doesn't matter, though. His perseverance pulls him through. Both boys and girls will see themselves in Mo, even if their passions lie in a non-sporty direction.

Want to Play book cover

WANT TO PLAY? (Confetti Kids series) by Paula Yoo, illustrated by Shirley Ng-Benitez

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

1st grade summer reading lists usually contain well-known classics like Henry and Mudge, Frog and Toad and Little Bear. I think Confetti Kids is the new classic easy reader series! This great collection of beginning readers depicts a diverse group of neighborhood kids engaging in everyday experiences. In Want to Play? the children head out to the park for a day of fun.

A Trip to the Bottom of the World book cover

A TRIP TO THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD (series) by Frank Viva

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Viva's own experience traveling to the Antarctic inspired the story of a mouse and his owner. Dialogue is told in comic bubbles, with the mouse repeating the familiar refrain, "Can we go home now?" You really can't go wrong with any of the TOON books. They are labelled with different reading and interest levels. If graphic novels motivate beginning readers, you will do well to bring home stacks of TOON books for your child. I've never read one I didn't like. See all their level one books here.

Very Easy Beginning Chapter Books

Bunjitsu Bunny book cover showing bunny in karate uniform kicking

BUNJITSU BUNNY (series) by John Himmelman

Find it Amazon | Bookshop

Bunjitsu Bunny one of my favorite easy chapter book series! Each book is composed of short vignettes about Isabel and her friends who all study martial arts. The clever and funny stories convey a zen-like lesson without being at all preachy. My then-6 year old was very into the idea of battles and fighting so he of course loved reading a book in which the first action sequence involved the possibility of one character head-butting a door (they don't actually get that far...). I, however, was delighted with the "sneaky" lessons in non-violence, friendship, compassion and self-discipline!

Mia Mayem box set

MIA MAYHEM (series) by Kara West, illustrated by Leeza Hernandez

Find it: Amazon |Bookshop

This is an easy chapter book series with large text and lots of illustrations. Mia is an 8-year-old girl who finds out she is a superhero when she receives an invitation to attend an after school Program for In-Training Superheroes. Now she must figure out a way to be both a regular girl AND a secret superhero.

Kondo and Kezumi Visit Giant Island book cover

KONDO & KEZUMI VISIT GIANT ISLAND (series) by David Goodner, illustrated by Andrea Tsurumi

Find it: Amazon | Bookshop

The colorful illustrations in this series will appeal to reluctant readers. Kondo and Kezumi are great friends who spend their days frolicking and looking for berries. One day a message with a map in a bottle washes up on shore and the pair build a boat and set out to see the islands on the map. After visiting Dairy Isle and Fireskull Island, they land on Giant Island where they meet Albert, an anthropomorphized mountain who is so delighted to have some company he doesn't want them to leave. Not to worry, it all ends happily.

Smell My Foot! book cover

CHICK AND BRAIN: SMELL MY FOOT! (series) by Cece Bell

Find it: Amazon | Bookshop

When first graders needs a little summer reading motivation, give them a book that will send them into fits of giggles. The rule-following Chick and the not-so-smart Brain work out a misunderstanding about the proper protocol of offering your foot for a sniff. It's a lesson that is sure to come in handy many times during one's lifetime.

Fox and Chick The Party book cover

FOX AND CHICK: THE PARTY AND OTHER STORIES (series) by Sergio Ruzzier

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

I adore this series about two friends who sometimes annoy each other, but ultimately remember the things that make them friends. I've always loved Ruzzier's illustrations and dry humor (after all, he wrote one of my all time favorite books EVER, Amandina) and the comic strip format makes it fun to read. A real winner of a book.

Nonfiction

Six National Geographic books for kids

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC (series) by various authors

Find them: Bookshop | Amazon

Kids are naturally curious about all sorts of topics and learning obscure facts which they can use to dazzle others. National Geographic publishes books on a wide array of topics and in a number of different reading levels, so it should be easy to find a book that will interest your child.

Five Giggle and Learn books

GIGGLE AND LEARN series by Kevin McCloskey

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

The graphic novel format in this five book series brings to life facts and stories about underrated animals. Snails, worms, pigeons, fish and ants all have their day. True to the moniker, "Giggle and Learn," each TOON book holds lots of humor as well as science.

This Is How We Do It book cover

THIS IS HOW WE DO IT by Matt Lamothe

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

The book follows seven children from different countries: Italy, Japan, Uganda, Russia, India, Peru and Iran. Each child describes their home, school, family, food and  daily life. This is a great starting point for conversations about the differences and similarities between life in different countries, but also how children in the same country don't all live the same way. At the end, photographs reveal the actual families depicted in in the book. I love the large size of the book, and how the illustrations invite a lengthly perusal.

Want to inspire your rising second grader to read this summer? Give them a stack of books from this 2nd grade summer reading list. 7 and 8 year olds (and some 6 year olds, too) may be starting to enjoy longer books and summer is a great time for these new readers to explore a variety of books to find out just what they like!

Second grade summer reading list

As I've mentioned on other summer book lists, a group of kids this age will present at different reading levels and stages. But as my friend Jodie over at Growing Book by Book reminds us, stop stressing about book levels. Some of you may have kids who still prefer to be read to, or only want to skim longer books, or are still reading easy readers, and other children may be reading fluently by this age. Meet your kids where they are in their reading journey! Here are some great 2nd grade books to get your kids started this summer.

The Bad Guys books box set

THE BAD GUYS (series) by Aaron Blabey

I read the first book in the series out loud and my then-8 year old and I could not stop laughing! He subsequently gobbled up the next two books on his own. Mr. Wolf is on a mission to change his reputation and convinces his fellow reprobates, Mr. Snake, Mr. Piranha and Mr. Shark to join him in the Good Guys Club. Their first mission is to free 200 dogs from the Maximum Security City Dog Pound! Absolutely hilarious and extremely silly in the very best way.
