Handmade watercolor bookmarks are great gifts for kids to make for teachers and classmates. Bookmarks are useful so they won't collect dust or be put in the give away pile!

These artistic, diy bookmarks are easy for kids to make and the watercolor resist technique means kids can personalize the bookmark for the recipient.

How to Make Watercolor Bookmarks

Not only do handmade watercolor bookmarks make a great gift, but making the bookmarks is a fun art project.

Materials

  • Watercolor paper
  • White crayon, or clear wax pencil
  • Watercolors
  • Paint brush
  • Scissors

Optional materials:

  • Laminator and laminating sheets
  • Hole punch
  • Ribbon and beads

Instructions

Cut watercolor paper into strips about 1 and a half inches wide and 6 inches long. If you are going to laminate the bookmarks, I recommend using thin watercolor paper rather than the heavy, expensive stuff.

Using the wax crayon write the name of each recipient on individual bookmarks. Sure, your child's handwriting may not be perfect, or ready for to open an Etsy story, but that makes each bookmark more special.

If your child has trouble with using a white crayon on white paper, if is perfectly fine to use a colored crayon.

Next, paint over the writing with watercolors. Allow your child the creative freedom to choose colors and method of application. The only necessary instruction is that they need to cover all the writing with watercolor paint in order to reveal the name on the bookmark.

If desired, paint the reverse side of the bookmark.

MORE: Creative fun with salt and watercolors

Optional Steps

After the bookmarks are dry, you will want to decide if you are going to laminate the bookmark. If they are gifts, I recommend doing so. Most people don't have their own laminating machine. We took our bookmarks to the local copy shop, which laminated them for us.

In addition, if you want to add a tassel to the bookmark, use a hole punch to make a small hole in the top of the bookmark. Next, tie a ribbon through the hole, adding beads, if desired, for an extra-fancy look.

Presentation

We wrapped each personalized watercolor bookmark up with a small moleskin notebook. If these are gifts for teachers, they may also love to get a new read aloud book for the classroom!

You could even have your child make personalized gift wrap.

Of course the teachers LOVED the bookmarks my son made. How could they not?

Will the right bookmark help kids remember to return their books to the library? It can't hurt to try! These free, printable, eye-catching circus themed library bookmarks coloring page feature fun messages that aim to do just that.

Three circus bookmarks and book on pink and yellow background

Children's book illustrator and author, and library patron, Melanie Hope Greenberg, has been bringing readers a year of coloring page bookmarks and these wonderful circus library bookmarks are a great addition to the collection.

Each of the three printable bookmarks features a different circus character–dancing unicorn, juggling clown and elephant–in addition to a gentle reminder about returning the book to the library.

Who Could Use a Library Bookmark?

A better question, is "Who couldn't use a circus library bookmark?"

However, here are some ideas!

Librarians will love handing out these bookmarks to young patrons. Use the free coloring pages as a story time activity, or with a summer reading package. Or, cut out individual bookmarks and slip one in a book when young readers check out their next best read.

Teachers can also use these bookmarks with classroom libraries. Give students a bookmark coloring page to work on during down time, and kids will be sure not to no to forget their books at home (fingers crossed!).

Families, scout troops or other youth organizations can print out library bookmark coloring pages, color them in and then distribute them to libraries as part of a service project. A local library may love to get a stack of free bookmarks to hand out. (Just be sure to check with your library to find out the best way to go about it.)

Make the Library Bookmarks

How to make the bookmarks

  1. Print out circus library bookmarks

Get your bookmarks here (by clicking on the following link you agree to our terms of service; see end of post for details*): Return to library circus bookmarks

  2. Gather supplies

You need the bookmark printable, scissors, crayons, pencils or markers and other craft supplies as desired. plain library bookmarks with crayons and scissors

  3. Color and cut

Seems obvious, right? Color the bookmarks however you want. No need to stay in the lines. Feel free to embellish with stickers, sequins, glitter glue or whatever you want!

When you are finished coloring and decorating, cut individual bookmarks out with a scissors or paper cutter (with adult supervision!).finished circus bookmarks with crayons

  4. Tip

For a sturdier bookmark, print on card stock, or laminate finished bookmarks.

  5. Read and use!

And don't forget to return books to the library!

A good bookmark doesn't just help you remember where you left off reading. It also doesn't just help you preserve pages from the viciousness of dog-earing or spines from the indignity of being placed open and face down.

A good bookmark–the perfect bookmark–tells you what to read next! That's why parents, librarians, teachers, as well as kids will love these read-alike bookmarks!

printable read alike bookmarks on orange background with books

These printable bookmarks are based on our Read Alike Book List series. I turned the top sixteen most popular lists into bookmarks with five "read next" recommendations.

Each read alike bookmark boasts that the child is currently reading a well loved book and declares that they will read the following five books next. None of this wishy-washy, "can" read next stuff, right? These are books they will read next!

16 printable read alike book recommendation bookmarks with booklists

Five book recommendations is an inspiring number without being too overwhelming for more reluctant readers or slow readers. Ambitious kids will want to refer to our read alike book lists for ten or more read alike book recommendations.

Make the Bookmarks!

Instructions:

  1. Request the printable in the form below that says "Get the 16 Bookmark Printable"
  2. Head over to your email to get the printable and print it out.
  3. We recommend using heavy paper or card stock, but standard white paper will work just fine.
  4. Cut out the bookmark(s) that you want to use.
  5. Get reading!

Sure, you could run out to the store and pick up a pack of ready-made valentines for your child's class at school. But wouldn't it be more fun if they gave each of their friends a valentine bookmark coloring page? These exclusive and love-ly (see what I did there?) bookmarks are designed by children's book author and illustrator, Melanie Hope Greenberg. And like all of the coloring pages Melanie makes for you, they are totally free.

Before you print these out, you'll want to decide the following: will each classmate get their own printable sheet with four cute valentine bookmarks to color on their own? Or, will your child color and cut out enough single bookmarks for everyone? A third option is to give a single uncolored bookmark to each child. Which will it be? You decide!
