When it feels daunting to find the right book for your teenager, this YA book gift guide should help find the just the right book for your teens. Plus, my own teen helped me choose some of the books, which reflect a wide variety of interests and genres, so you know they are teen-approved!

Collage of books with text overlay, YA Book Gift Guide by interest & genre.

Note: this list contains Amazon and Bookshop affiliate links. Purchases made through these links may earn a commission for this blog. Bookshop also supports independent bookstores.

Because I don't have time to read every YA book that has been published, I am extremely picky about which titles I choose to spend valuable time reading for lists. I only choose books which already have received critical acclaim and starred reviews!

Fantasy and Science Fiction

Fantasy, sci-fi and speculative fiction books transport your teens to imaginary worlds and allow them to escape–however briefly–the daily angst of being a teenager.

A Door in the Dark, YA book cover.

A Door in the Dark by Scott Reintgen

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

When a portal spell malfunctions, six teenage wizards, including the scholarship student Ren Monroe and the wealthy Theo, are stranded in the Dires, a wilderness that was home to the last dragons. The teens must complete a dangerous journey as mysterious forces threaten their lives. The brilliant world-building and heart-pounding tension will keep your teen rapidly turning the pages of this thrilling novel.

Aurora Rising book for teens.

Aurora Rising (series) by Amie Kaufmann and Jay Kristoff

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

My teen rates this book as "Really, really good, mom." It's 2380 and a group of six diverse graduating cadets are preparing for their first mission as representatives of an interplanetary peacekeeping coalition. But a mysterious and superhuman stowaway, Aurora, threatens the order. Full of high drama, intriguing personalities, thrills and laughs. Your teen will want to pick up the next book in the series right away.

Scythe book series

Scythe (series) by Neal Shusterman

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

My 14-year-old gobbled up this series, but fair warning, it is an intense story. The action takes place in a world where humans have conquered hunger, disease, war and even death. The Scythes are a select group who are commanded to kill, in order to keep the population under control. Now, Citra and Rowan are recruited against their will to become Scythes. Each book in the series is huge, but will keep teens reading (and off their phones) well into the night.

Star Splitter book cover.

Star Splitter by Matthew J. Kirby

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Ever since I read Kirby's middle grade mystery, Icefall (which I've included on a billion book lists in an effort to get it into the hands of your kids), I have been a fan of his books. If your teen is a fan of sci-fi, this is the novel to give to them! Jessica Mathers is teleported via a device that will remind Star Trek fans of the transporter (with an explanation of how it works that I was not expecting!) to a distant mission involving a post-extinction world. However, upon arrival she encounters a replica of herself and is faced with a bizarre myster. The narration alternates between the two Jessicas as she tries to unravel what happened.

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

Seraphina (series) by Rachel Hartman

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Hartman creates an irresistible world where humans and dragons live side by side. The peace between the two is tenuous. Our narrator, Seraphina, is half-human, half-dragon and she describes the dangerous situation as an investigation into a royal murder gets underway, revealing a plot to destroy the peace. Be sure to pick up all three books of this gorgeous series.

Graceling book cover

Graceling (series) by Kristin Cashore

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

In the Seven Kingdoms, everyone is born with a Grace. Katsa's Grace is killing. She was raised by her uncle to believe that she must use her skills to enforce his will. She becomes friends with Prince Po, and Katsa learns that her Grace might not be what she thought after all. The whole series is fantastic and features strong females. Also available as a graphic novel, adapted by the amazing Gareth Hinds.

Verse Novels

Enter the Body, YA book cover.

Enter the Body by Joy McCullough

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

I felt like I was holding my breath the entire time I was reading this book. Under a stage in the glow of a ghost light, a group of Shakespearean heroines tell and re-frame their stories, taking control of their own fates. While a knowledge of Shakespeare's plays and characters (Juliet, Ophelia, Cordelia, and Lavinia, in particular) is helpful, it's not necessary. Stunning.

Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds, book cover.

Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Reynolds' free verse novel about a 15-year-old seeking revenge for the death of his brother has earned a gazillion awards. Will puts a gun in his waistband and gets on an elevator. At each floor the door opens and Will is confronted with someone connected to gun violence or his brother. Feelings of hope, despair, connection, loss, and community all vie for our attention in this unforgettable story. Also available in a graphic novel version.

Sports True Stories

Does your teen love to get out on the court or the field? Then try giving them one of these inspiring true stories of athletes who went after what they loved and became the best in their sport!

Inaugural Ballers book cover.

Inaugural Ballers: The True Story of the First US Women's Olympic Basketball Team by Andrew Maraniss

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Social change, equal rights and a love of the basketball collide in this fascinating history of the sport. The passage of Title IX in 1972 finally allowed women and girls equal opportunities to play and compete in sports, and in 1973 Women's basketball was added to the Olympics. Even someone like me, bored to tears by watching professional sports will appreciate the fascinating history behind the rise of the first women's olympic basketball team.

Messenger: The Legend of Muhammad Ali, graphic novel book cover.

Messenger: The Legend of Muhammad Ali by Marc Bernardin, illustrated by Ron Salas

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Teens interested in social history and sports, or those who grew up hearing stories about the legendary Ali, will speed through this compelling graphic novel about the charismatic boxer. The novel is separated into twelve "rounds" detailing Cassius Clay's training and success, his civil rights activism and personal triumphs and challenges. Mesmerizing.

Historical Fiction

A good YA historical fiction novel reveals truths about the present as much as it teaches us about the past.

The Downstairs Girl YA book

The Downstairs Girl by Stacey Lee

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

I could not put this book down! When Jo Kuan is fired from her job as a milliner she gets work as a lady's maid to a cruel mistress. It's late 19th century Atlanta and folks' opinions of race, gender and class are not exactly enlightened. But when Jo writes an anonymous advice column titled "Dear Miss Sweetie," she challenges the prejudiced views of society. Society is not ready for her, however, and there is a backlash which sends her on a new journey of discovery about her past. Excellent!

Just a Hat by S. Khubiar, book cover.

Just a Hat by S. Khubiar

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Joseph Nissan lives in small town Texas in 1979. His family, immigrants from Revolution-era Iran, are also the only Jewish family in town. Joseph's good friends are his Tejano neighbors and together they get into all kinds of mischief. When he joins the football team, Joseph finds a way to channel the frustration he feels, but it also provides a way for him to connect with others and forge a path for himself. This may have a historical setting, but teens will absolutely relate to Joseph's emotional journey.

Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue book cover.

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue (series) by Mackenzi Lee

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

When I asked for something funny and quirky, a gentleman at an independent bookstore recommended this YA book to me. In 18th century Europe, two young British men, one white and one mixed race set out to tour the continent. It does not turn out to be a tame, landmark-touring and museum visiting trip, however. Monty's hedonism lands the friends in a heap of trouble. The writing is gleeful and so much fun–as if Oscar Wilde was in an action movie–and the themes of xenophobia, race relations, homophobia and power-corrupted politicians will seem all too familiar to today's teen. Not to mention the zillions of starred reviews this book won!

My Contrary Mary book cover.

My Contrary Mary (series) by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

I highly recommend this series of historical fiction YA novels for teens who enjoy imagining (or re-imagining) the lives of powerful and influential women. The titular character of My Contrary Mary is Mary Queen of Scots. Other books in the series focus on Lady Jane Grey, Mary Shelley, and Calamity Jane.

Contemporary Realism

These YA books portray familiar worlds to teens while also showing them the lives of others, helping to develop compassion and understanding for one's fellow humans.

Where You See Yourself, YA novel book cover

Where You See Yourself by Claire Forrest

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

It's senior year and Effie is considering her college options, trying to get the high school administration to take accessibility seriously, and wondering if her crush might feel the same way about her. Effie wants to go to college in NYC and pursue studies in media representation but the college isn't made to accommodate her wheelchair. This appealing coming-of-age story thoughtfully addresses disability issues with a narrator who focuses on developing her ability to speak up for herself.

Darius the Great is Not Okay, book cover.

Darius the Great is Not Okay (2 book series) by Adib Khorram

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Darius's father is white, his mother is from Iran. At school, he is bullied and struggles with depression. When he goes on a trip to Iran to visit his ill grandfather he doesn't think he will fit in there either. This is a powerful book about finding your place, learning the meaning of true friendship and having confidence in yourself. My teen loved it, as well as the sequel, Darius the Great Deserves Better.

On the Come Up book cover.

On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

This offering comes from the author of The Hate U Give. Sixteen-year-old Bri is the daughter of a underground hip hop legend, and she, too, wants to be a music artist. But things are difficult, both at home, where she lives with her widowed mother who struggles with a drug addiction, and at her art school, where she suffers humiliation when one of her songs goes viral. This is a gorgeous and heartfelt story.

Superhero Stories

You probably never thought about DC or Marvel characters getting their own brilliantly written novels that received starred reviews. The two books for teens I'm featuring here aren't the only ones! Publishers are capitalizing on the comics trend to recruit well-known, talented authors to pen stories about your teen's favorite superheroes and villains.

Loki YA novel, book cover.

Loki: Where Mischief Lies (series) by Mackenzi Lee

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Lee writes an origin story for Loki and his journey to prove himself as something more than a villain. Amora, the only other person who sees the good in Loki is banished to Earth. Loki follows, sent to London by his father, Odin, to find the source of Asgardian magic linked to mysterious murders.

Wonder Woman YA novel for teens.

Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Diana, the Amazonian warrior, rescues Alia, a 17-year-old New Yorker and descendant of Helen of Troy, and in doing so is exiled from Themyscira. Together with several other mortals, they team up to defeat their enemies and save the world. Written by the author of the popular Six of Crows series. Also available in a graphic novel version.

Graphic Novels

Graphic novels come in all genres. Note that several of the traditional novels on this YA book list are also available in graphic novel versions.

Two Gareth Hinds graphic novels

The Iliad and The Odyssey, graphic novels adapted by Gareth Hinds

Find The Iliad: Bookshop | Amazon

Find The Odyssey: Bookshop | Amazon

One summer I gave these two graphic novel adaptations of the Homeric classics to my elder teen because I wasn't sure he was going to have a chance to read the originals in school, and I was certain he wouldn't read them on his own. He LOVED them. Hinds is a master at adapting classics into graphic novel format and these are terrific. Both of these tales are full of illustrations of gory warfare (the kind that you'd have to imagine if you read the original epic poems) so they aren't for the faint of heart. In case you're wondering, his high school class did end up reading The Odyssey. Find more of our favorite graphic novel adaptations of classics.

Almost American Girl by Robin Ha, graphic novel.

Almost American Girl by Robin Ha

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

In her illustrated memoir, Robin describes her life as a teen after moving to American from Korea with her single mother. They first move to Alabama where Robin must learn to speak a new language and interpret new cultural signals. Unhappy with her new life, Robin clashes with her mother, and the two start over with a move to Virginia where Robin fits in with a diverse community. Author-artist Ha deftly merges her immigrant narrative with her mother's backstory to create a moving, relatable memoir.

March by John Lewis

March (trilogy) by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Lewis, a congressman from Georgia is one of our greatest heroes of the Civil Rights Era. This graphic novel trilogy is Lewis' first hand account of his experiences during the civil rights movement. Lewis provides many personal details and focuses on the non-violent philosophy of the movement. Superb.

Pirate Queen graphic novel for teens

Pirate Queen: The Legend of Grace O'Malley by Tony Lee, illustrated by Sam Hart

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Here's a fun, rousing tale of a 16th century heroine who wanted to keep the English from invading Ireland. Better than any action movie, this book takes readers on a high-stakes adventure in which Grace skillfully wields a sword and sails the high seas in battles against the enemy.

Nonfiction

Confession: I love reading YA nonfiction. Why? Because I can get so much juicy information without having to wade through 500 densely written pages! After giving these books to your teen, you'll want to read them, too!

America Redux, book cover.

America Redux: Visual Stories from Our Dynamic History by Ariel Aberg-Riger

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

This is a must-read for teens interested in American history. It covers so many topics that are glossed over in high school history classes, which, unfortunately, have given Americans a skewed perspective of how events in this country unfolded. I especially appreciated the visual elements as well as the non-linear perspective. Very thought provoking and a book grown-ups will want to read, too.

Impossible Escape: A True Story of Survival and Heroism in Nazi Europe by Steve Sheinkin, book cover.

Impossible Escape: A True Story of Survival and Heroism in Nazi Europe by Steve Sheinkin

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

The story of how Rudolf Vrba escaped from Auschwitz is astounding. Nonfiction great, Sheinkin, vividly tells the parallel stories of Rudi, a teen sent to Auschwitz in 1944, and Gerta, a Jewish teen hiding in plain sight in Hungary under an assumed identity. Sheinkin does not shirk his duty to provide documentary evidence. The book concludes with an episode in which Vrba appears in a Canadian courtroom in a case involving a Holocaust denier. Powerful (an understatement if ever there was one).

Indigenous Peoples' History

An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States for Young People by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz; adapted by Jean Mendoza and Debbie Reese

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Reading this fascinating text, your teens will go beyond the limited school-book, colonial-centered history of the United States. Teens will learn how to think critically about the "discovery" of America, and be encouraged to challenge main-stream representations of historical events. They will also be introduced to a new way of thinking about environmentalism and social activism. An absolutely essential read.

Dissenter on the Bench book.

Dissenter on the Bench by Victoria Ortiz

Find it: Amazon

Ortiz writes a wonderful biography of RGB, from her upbringing in Brooklyn to her work on civil rights as a lawyer and as a distinguished member of the Supreme Court. Great attention is paid to Ginsberg's own experiences with discrimination as well as her achievements. Not only that, but Ortiz's narrative is an excellent example of fine biographical writing.

Samurai Rising book.

Samurai Rising: The Epic Life of Minamoto Yoshitsune by Pamela S. Turner

Find it: Amazon

This is a gripping biography, but I won't lie, there are A LOT of people who die unnatural deaths. Minamoto Yoshitsune was a 12th century samurai warrior who, after the murder of his father, grows up amongst the monks at Kurama Temple. With stunning grit and daring ingenuity, Yoshitsune eventually becomes a warrior who is both admired and feared. Yes, there are a lot of gruesome details in this book, so perhaps it is not for sensitive souls. However, if you have a teen who loves Japanese or military history, this is a stirring narrative.

Classics

Yes, you can get teens interested in the classics, especially when you find classic books that have special relevance to current events. (And also, when they are not required school reading...)

Fahrenheit 451 book cover

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

The action of Fahrenheit 451, set in a dystopian future where truth is threatened and television is all-powerful, will seem eerily familiar to any teen who follows the news. Fireman Guy Montag's job is to burn books and he never questions it, until he meets Clarisse, who opens his eyes to different possibilities.

The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Perhaps your teen has been watching the critically acclaimed Hulu series and has yet to read the original tale. Now's the time to put Atwood's chilling tale of Republic of Gilead in their hands. When they are done reading, ask them their thoughts about the story of Offred and her experience in the totalitarian society bent on the oppression and control of women.

LAPTOP BACKPACK

Find it: Toteback | Backpack

Teens tend to abuse their backpacks so much that it's likely they will be grateful for an upgraded way to lug around their gear. For teens who carry a laptop to and from school, the right size backpack is essential. These options from the Swedish company, Fjällräven, are fantastic. Stick with a traditional backpack, or get the convertible "toteback" that switches between tote and a backpack style.

Orange facts a day calendar in box

365 PAGE-A-DAY CALENDAR

We get these page-a-day calendars for our teens every year and the novelty hasn't worn off, even into the teen years. One of my sons loves getting a sports or science fact-a-day version, and the other can't get enough of 365 Stupidest Things Ever Said! There are tons of themes to choose from like cats, history, cartoons, and sports so you're sure to find just the right calendar.

Some favorites:

  • Stupidest Things Ever Said (my youngest son LOVES this one!)
  • Amazing Facts
  • Unexplained Mysteries
  • Origami-A-Day

Black Sprocket printer printing photo next to mobile phone showing same photo.

HP SPROCKET PORTABLE PHOTO PRINTER

Find it: Printer (available in multiple colors) | Paper Pack

This portable mini-printer is a must-have. Using an ink-free technology, teens print photos from their phones onto adhesive-backed paper. The app also allows teens to add digital stickers and edit their images before printing. The Sprocket can also print from multiple devices and is compatible with both iOs and Android devices. It's wireless, rechargeable, and fits in your pocket. Amazing.

Grey foot roller

FOOT ROLLER

Find it: Foot roller

This was a spur-of-the-moment gift one year and it was a real winner! Our teen loves using the foot roller under his desk while he works on his homework. Not only does it feel luxurious, but it helps teens stay focused, especially those who have a tendency to fidget!

dart board with green and red magnetic darts

DART BOARD

Find it: Magnet Darts | Traditional Darts

Last year we set up a dart board and it has been a fantastic boredom buster. It was actually my teen who requested it. After all, when you are forced by your parents to indulge in screen-free time, it's good to have an outlet for your annoyance. (ha ha ha) Go with magnet darts or, if you don't mind the occasional hole in the wall, traditional steel-tipped darts.

Red powerbeats earbuds with wire that connects them

WIRELESS EARPHONES

Find it: Amazon

Apple's Air Buds are very popular, but they aren't always the best choice for active teens, or anyone who has problems with ear buds not fitting properly (that's me!). These wireless earphones sit securely around the ear and the addition of a connecting wire also aids in preventing them from getting lost!

Blue wireless headphones by Sony

NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES

Find it: Amazon (similar to the ones we bought)

Our teen was soooooo happy when we got him a pair of noise cancelling headphones because it meant he could limit the amount of time he had to spend listening to his younger sibling. These headphones are a splurge, but they are so, so worth it!

large digital alarm clock

ALARM CLOCK

Find it: Amazon

You might be thinking, "Aren't alarm clocks a touch old fashioned? Everyone uses their phone as an alarm, now!" Well, for those families who have a no phones in the bedroom while-you-are-supposed-to-be-sleeping policy, an alarm clock is essential. Our son has this exact giant clock and he loves it. It's battery operated, can hang on the wall or sit on a desk, gives the date and day of the week, the temperature, and humidity. AND, it sets the time automatically (amazing). It is great for kids who may struggle a bit with keeping to a schedule!

Dark blue, light blue, and orange waterbottles

HYDRO FLASK

Find it: Amazon

A water bottle? You seriously want me to give my teen a water bottle as a gift? Let me explain. Our teen requested a Hydro Flask water bottle and now it's the only one he likes to use. Yes, it's pricey for a water bottle, but it will last forever, and hey, it's a gift! Hydro Flasks come in a million colors, wide or narrow mouths, different lid styles and insulated or not. Our teen also loves his Hydro Flask tumbler, which I love because it means he only uses one glass a day, instead of filling up the sink with a different glass every time he is thirsty. So, yeah, I think you should consider a water bottle.

Colorful light strip with remote, cables and box

LED STRIP-LIGHTS

Find it: Amazon

Strip lights are a novelty gift item. Their sole purpose is to make your teenager's room look super cool and groovy, and that's okay! Sometimes you just need to hang out and enjoy the view.

Find it: Box of Matter

Subscription boxes make the best gifts for tweens and there are dozens of reasons. Not least of which is because it is the gift that keeps on giving. Just when your tween is whining "I'm bored!" a box full of intriguing goodies arrives on their doorstep!

We've searched out the best subscription boxes for tween, ages 9-12, that work to help kids develop their critical thinking and innovative creative skills, like arts and crafts, science, reading and even outdoor adventuring!

Plain brown open cardboard box with text "best subscription boxes for ages 9-12"

STEM Subscription Boxes

wooded crane science project with pieces and sitting on orange tinker crate box

Tinker Crate, is a science and engineering crate that is geared towards kids ages 9 and up. We subscribed to Tinker Crate for many years and absolutely loved it. Each project introduces kids to a different STEM concept, like hydraulics, electric currents, fluids in motion, and aerodynamics. The crate includes everything you need for the project, as well as detailed instructions, an explanation of the scientific concepts and ideas for further investigation. My kids put together a rocket, a glider, a catapult, an hydraulic arm, an irrigation system and more.

Art Boxes

Doodle crate box with items needed for leather portfolio project

Doodle Crate is an art and craft based box for kids ages 9 and up. Each month introduces a new technique, includes all the supplies needed for the project as well as a detailed handbook with instructions, and further ideas for maker projects. Video tutorials are also included. Past projects have included candle making, weaving, batik, leather work and more.

Adventure Boxes

THiNK OUTSiDE BOX. I love the idea for this box. The THiNK OUTSiDE BOX encourages kids to have screen-free fun outdoors. Each month a box full of 3 – 5 outdoor gear items, reference cards, outdoor education and activities for fun outdoor adventures arrives on your doorstep. The intro box includes a backpack and subsequent boxes are organized around a theme, like first aid, wildlife or navigation. The main subscription is geared towards kids ages 7-16, but a Junior box subscription for kids 4-7 is also available for younger kids who want to get in on the action (and who wouldn't!).

Display of contents inside Sliverquicken Quest subscription box.

Silverquicken Quest invites kids to use their detective skills and imagination to solve an escape room-type puzzle each month. Each mystery is set within a fantasy story about the secret Silverquicken School. Inside the box are stories, puzzles and clues, as well as fun tools like decoders. The box is aimed at kids ages 9-12 and is designed for your young puzzler to work independently or with others.

Book Boxes

Four photos featuring girl laughing while reading and displays of middle grade books

Bookroo has book subscriptions boxes for different age ranges, including a middle grade box perfect for tween readers. Each box includes two high quality middle grade books for ages 9-12. A useful feature of Bookroo is that you can alternate between different box levels, so if your reader also needs chapter books for 7-10 year olds, they can get a few of both. All of the the past boxes have featured books that I would personally recommend.

Display of various comic books for kids

Comic Crate. For kids who love comic books, Comic Crate is a fun way to encourage them to read. Each monthly box includes 6 brand-new comic books. Parents can select an age-appropriate rating for their child from all-ages to TeenPLUS.

Open box with two children's novels, notebook, snack and cute office supplies.

beTWEEN the Bookends is aimed at kids ages 9-13. Each box includes 2-3 books and a variety of themed "lifestyle" items. The items are curated for a gendered girl audience, but of course that doesn't mean the box is only for girls. That said, it's best to keep the targeted audience in mind. Many of the books in past boxes are ones we have read and enjoyed.

Cooking Boxes

Yummly Box and contents including recipe cards, zine and hand holding a burger

Yummly Crate is designed to teach kids ages 6-14 about the science of cooking! Imagine that–a STEM based approach to learning how to cook. Young chefs learn about biology and chemistry all while experimenting in the kitchen and whipping up yummy treats. Each monthly box includes 2-3 recipes, 2 hands-on projects and a zine. Yummly Crate is an excellent choice if you are looking for a subscription box that will also foster family bonding.

Although the best gift by far is the gift of reading, but near the top is the gift of play! Our family's favorite gift by far is the ongoing joy of subscription boxes that promote curiosity and playful discovery.

Subscription boxes have become quite trendy in the last few years, and for good reason! It's a well-known fact that kids get bored of their toys pretty quickly so sparking their imagination with a creative learning project once a month is the perfect remedy.

stack of subscription boxes

(Note: this post is not sponsored; we purchased the boxes ourselves! links and images are affiliate links.)

Why do we love subscription boxes so much? One of the best reasons we encourage you to find a box that's right for you is that they include everything you need!!! No more hunting around for materials and trying to figure out what project to do with the kids.

They are absolutely perfect for parents who want to spend time with their kids on tinker-y type projects but are just a wee bit lazy. (No shame it that!) If that sounds like you then one of these boxes might just become your favorite gift for kids, too. There's something to suit kids of all ages and interests!

KiwiCo.

Our family has subscribed to the KiwiCo. boxes for years! I've written before about how much I love the one on one time they afforded me with each of my kids. The best part of the crates is that they contain active projects, not just "make it and put it on a shelf" projects.

Collage of kiwico subscription boxes.

KiwiCo. Family by Age and Interest:

Ages 5-8, crafts, science: Kiwi Crate is recommended for ages 5-8. We've we put together projects like a marble run, miniature golf, luminaries and more. The crates contain art, craft and science projects.

Ages 9+, STEM: Tinker Crate, a science and engineering crate that is geared towards kids ages 9 and up. This is the crate I purchased for my tween. He put together a rocket, a glider, a catapult, an hydraulic arm, an irrigation system and more. I do think kids ages 7 and up will enjoy this crate, but will require more parental involvement for younger kids.

Ages 9+, Arts and Crafts: Doodle Crate, an art and craft based box for kids ages 9 and up. Can I let you in on a secret? I am seriously thinking of ordering this for myself!

Social Science, Ages 6-11: Atlas Crate, for kids who want to learn about the world, its history, culture and geography.

Babies and Toddlers: Panda Crate, for kids ages 0-36 months. These are research based products designed to stimulate brain development.

Preschoolers, Crafts: Koala Crate, which is perfect ages 3-4 years old and contains an arts and crafts project.

Teens, Arts and Crafts: Maker Crate. This is a craft box for teens ages 14 and up. The types of projects include macrame, clay, textile art and more.

Teens, STEM: Eureka Crates. This is a STEM-based box for teens ages 14 and up. Kits include projects like building an electric pencil sharpener, making and automatic soap dispenser kit, and other electronic and tech projects.

Universal Yums

Every month our family gets a box of global treats from Universal Yums. I'm not exaggerating when I say my kids jump up and down when it arrives on our doorstep every month. Each month features treats from a different country as well as an activity booklet that teaches a bit about the country from which they came. This box is definitely a huge favorite of ours!

Find it: Green Kids Crafts at Crate Joy | Green Kids Crafts

I love that Green Kids Crafts has two versions of their subscription box based on the age of the recipient. The Junior Box is for 3-4 year olds and the Discovery Box is for 5-10 year olds. This long-standing, award-winning company supplies kids with 4-6 STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) activities and a 12-page magazine in each box. Crafts have an environmental or nature theme that teach kids about topics like animals, botany, or the night sky.

Crate Joy

Explore: Crate Joy

Crate Joy is a hub for finding just the right subscription box, rather than a single recommendation. They source hundreds of different boxes and organize them by interest category (like food, crafts, books, etc.), ages (kids, teens and adults). I can't vouch for all the boxes they offer, but if you want something unique like puzzle mysteries to solve, or a box of healthy snacks (we got the Snack Sack for a year or so and loved it), it's a great place to poke around.

where the mountain meets the moon book box set

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin

(Fantasy) I've said a million times that Lin's Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is one of my all time favorite middle grade novels. The original novel follows Minli's quest to find the Old Man on the Moon and change her family's fortune. The second two books are companion novels, rather than traditional sequels and all three draw heavily upon Chinese folklore and include Lin's stunning illustrations.

book covers for 5 books in the birchbark house series

The Birchbark House Series by Louise Erdrich

Find it: Amazon | Bookshop

(Historical Fiction) I've mentioned this series on so many book lists and it never fails to enchant. Erdrich's stories follow the life of Omakayas, a Ojibwa girl in the 19th century. Erdrich imbues her books with humor and warmth but does not shy away from the difficult realities of life as an indigenous person in North America. I often recommend Erdrich's epic adventure to families who like, or want an alternative to, Little House on the Prairie.

(Fantasy) This two-book series is full of fast-paced action and crazy humor. Salvador Vidón is the new kid, but is also an unusual kid because he is able to open portals into alternate universes with his mind. He meets Gabi Reál who is a bit suspicious of his explanation about the mysterious things that happen when he is around. Together they break–and then fix–the universe! Highly recommended!

Mia wants to be a writer but worries about her English skills. She takes over running the front desk of the motel and makes friends wherever she goes. She experiences anti-Chinese prejudice and witnesses racial bias against People of Color in her neighborhood. She dreams of winning a writing contest so her parents can own their own hotel instead of working endlessly for little pay. Want to give a unique gift to kids that will spark their creative juices and encourage growth mindset? I have the perfect idea for you. A DIY Board Game Kit!

We love games at the holidays, and this year I am trying something a little bit different with my gift guides with this make your own game kit.  It can be a DIY board game kit or all the fixings for an inventive card game! Inspire your kids to invent their own card, board, or dice games with these open-ended game pieces.

Diy game board kit makes a creative gift for kids

I make it a point to make sure at least one (usually several because I am a nut) family games are under the tree so we can spend the rest of the holiday vacation playing fun new card games and board games.

Think how much quickly the school holiday will whiz by when your children are hard at work decorating their own game cards, painting pawns and coming up with clever strategies! (Note: links and images may be affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.)

I've also curated all these items, plus more, including "meeples" on an easy to use list over at Amazon. Meeples! Don't you just love that word? Click here to see the guide plus all the extras.

Card Games

Blank deck of cards. Be sure to include a set of permanent markers. What will they make? A standard deck of 52 cards? A whimsical deck? Maybe they will design a specialized deck for a board game they are inventing! The sky is the limit.

Dice

Multicolored and multi-sided dice. What's more fun that a quick dice game with a standard set of 6-sided dice? Why a self-invented dice game using a 10 sided (or more) set of dice! You can get dice in all shapes and sized to inspire kids to roll away!

Blank dice! Kids can use Sharpies to write numbers, letters or even draw pictures on each side. Alternatively, use stickers to decorate each side.

We love having lots of colored dice so everyone can have their own set during game play. The kids always like having their favorite colors.

Game Boards

Blank Game Boards are essential for creating your own board games, of course!

Game Accessories

Spinners. What I love about these transparent spinners is you can use a dry erase marker to change up how you want to use them.

Chips come in very handy. You can make your own with small wooden discs and paint them the color you want. If you want to get really fancy, a box of poker chips will last forever. My kids love using our poker chips for all sorts of activities, as you've probably seen in our fiverton game.

Play Money will be useful if your child loves games like Monopoly and wants to add a financial element to the game.

Game Pawns and Tokens

Make pawns out of  wooden game dolls or meeples! An inexpensive and colorful paint set will inspire your children to design their own pawns to be used in any game. Perhaps they will paint pawns to represent the family. So cute.  Wooden discs that can be painted also come in handy as game tokens. If you've watched any of our game videos, you may have seen our homemade ones.

Make Your Own Board Game Kits

Maybe you'd rather buy a complete kit to inspire your children to make their own board game. There are several available that look like a lot of fun.

This board game set has everything you need, just add imagination! It includes a board, game pieces, blank cards, dice, spinner, rulebook, and timer!

DIY Board Games. This set is not so much an "invent your own games" but rather a "put together your own games" set. There are five boards with stickers and pieces to assemble to play popular traditional games like Snakes and Ladders and The Great Game of the Goose.

Serious board game enthusiasts can learn from game design masters with this informative book, Make Your Own Board Game: Designing, Building, and Playing an Original Tabletop Game by Jesse Terrance Daniels.

Don't forget to check out the full curated list of items here.

A field bag or backpack filled with hiking gear and essentials is a great way to encourage your kids to head outdoors for a nature walk, because what kid doesn't love a bag of gadgets!

What to put in a child's field bag.

Do your children have field bags? As devout ramblers in our local urban part, we've had fun filling our field bags with fun supplies and gear. My boys LOVE having a field bag of goodies to tote along with them outdoors. It makes them feel very important and official even though they may not be backpacking or camping in the "real" woods!

My mother delighted the boys by making them each a small canvas field bag. The boys personalized the bages with buttons and badges. For Christmas stocking stuffers we purchased simple gadgets that any urban park explorer would be proud to tote along on a hike.

MORE: Of course, we ALWAYS gear up for a nature walk by reading these picture books to inspire a love of nature!

The kids love their field bags so much and a fully stocked field bag makes an excellent gift for any kid! (Note: This post contains affiliate links that earn commission from qualifying purchases.)

The Bag

Before we get into the essential supplies, let's talk about THE BAG. For serious hikers, we recommend a backpack. The disadvantage to a backpack is that kids have to keep taking it off in order to access the goods.

However, these small backpacks from CamelBak, which are designed for easy access, are a great alternative to a crossbody bag like we use. Plus they have the cool feature of your kids being able to drink from a straw without opening their bag!

two canvas field bag surrounded by gear and gadgets

Fun Field Bag Gear and Gadgets

The following is a list of our favorite nature walk and hiking gear and gadgets for kids.

1. Headlamp

A headlamp like this one is essential! Truth be told, we don't go on many night walks. Primarily, these are used indoors to great delight, and every kid should have one!

2. Magnifying glass

Kids need a sturdy Magnifying glass so they can examine all the bugs they discover. Or, if they prefer, they can look closely at the veins in leaves, or the patterns in a petal. Alternatively, this lighted pocket microscope is amazing!

collage of four pocket nature field guides

3. Pocket field guides

There are all kinds of themed pocket field guides. Choose one depending on the season or the interest of your child. We like these Nature Study Guides; we have the Winter Tree Finder and Berry Finder. The Constellation Finder is great for night hikes.

4. Water bottle

No question, Klean Kanteen and Hydro Flask make the best water bottles! They are made from stainless steel, with no plastic lining. My kids' field bags are too small for water bottles. I'm considering getting them each a shoulder sling, but so far I've been toting the water bottles along in my own backpack.

5. Binoculars

My son has graduated to a pair of Nikon Trailblazers. My advice for buying binoculars if you are inexperienced (like I was) is to go to a specialty store and have your child try them out. The sales clerk can also give your child tips for how to use them. If you have very young children who are going to use the binoculars more for pretend play then toy binoculars like these are fine.

6. Bird log

If you have an enthusiastic birder, or a child who loves to observe animals, a bird Log to record essential important sightings! This spiral bound notebook has been a fun addition to our birding walks. It's easy to write in and gives prompts to kids for what kind of information is important to record.

7. Butterfly net

Granted, this bug net doesn't exactly fit in the bag, but it sure is fun to bring along. However, I recommend teaching your kids about catch and release! You'll want to educate them about how not to harm protected species.

8. Audubon bird call

Bird calls are a little controversial, but if you use them sparingly they are a great addition to your child's nature walk gear. Audubon also as a bird call app, and their article on how to use it ethically also applies to the fun wooden bird call they make. I recommend the physical bird call over the app, because I prefer not to have to whip out my phone in the middle of a peaceful nature walk.

9. All-in-one compass tool

We like this combination whistle-compass-thermometer thingy-majig. It's not fancy, but it's very inexpensive and it satisfies the kids' need to look like official hikers!

Additional Gear

  • Hand-me-down digital camera
  • Pen or pencil to record sightings in the bird log
  • Every serious birder has his own Sibley Bird Guide!
  • An assortment of local trail maps. You can usually pick these up at a tourist center or information booth.

I realize  some of these field bag supplies for kids may not be precisely essential for a walk in the park with mom. However, having it all sure makes a nature walk more fun. Plus, I've often found when the kids are ready to head home before I am, that a little peek in the bag is often just the right distraction to keep them interested in the great outdoors.

Happy walking!

Beautiful Oops! book

Beautiful Oops! by Barney Saltzberg

This is a great, classic choice to inspire kids who are worried about that their artwork should be perfect and planned out. This book list is my secret weapon.

And I'm handing it over to you. Free of charge. Because every child should be see their home filled with books. You're here because you agree not just with me, but with the experts who say that growing up surrounded by books has a powerful effect on the mind.

Picture book gifts for children

What you want is a list of the best picture books for kids that you can give as gifts. These books must fulfill several qualifications. The must inspire the imagination, they must encourage child-caregiver bonding, but most importantly, they must be books that you can be reasonably assured are not already on the child's bookshelf.

The titles on this list are the picture books that I keep buying as gifts. Without exception all of these books have received superb reviews from the experts and many are award winners, so you don't have to just take my word for it.

If you are looking for a book with a particular theme (like inventors or folktales, etc.), take a gander at the index of all my book lists.

Note: this list contains Amazon and Bookshop affiliate links. Purchases made through these links may earn a commission for this blog. Bookshop also supports independent bookstores.

Here are my top picture books to give to children:

Gift Books for Babies and Toddlers

Any child who is gifted one of these board books will cherish hearing it over and over again. These are wonderful books, both classic award winners, and diverse, contemporary choices.

Ten Night Eight board book

Ten, Nine, Eight by Molly Bang

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

It's likely someone else will give baby a copy of Goodnight Moon, but every child should also own a copy of this gentle, counting bedtime story. It is my favorite counting book of all time. Also available in Spanish.

Charlie Parker Played Be Bop book cover

Charlie Parker Played Be Bop by Chris Raschka

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

This one is good for preschoolers as well. When my kids were babies and toddlers they loved listening to the jazzy, onomatopoeic text.

Little You book cover

Little You by Richard Van Camp, illustrated by Julie Flett

Find it: Amazon | Bookshop

I absolutely love this adorable board book. Little You is a tender, rhyming love story from mom and dad to their baby. Illustrator Julie Flett (who has rapidly become one of my favorite illustrators) uses autumnal colors to depict the family as the baby grows. Simply marvelous.

Besos for Baby book

Besos for Baby: A Little Book of Kisses by Jen Arena, illustrated by Blanca Gómez

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

This is sweet little board with repetitive and rhyming text. Primarily in English with a few Spanish words. You will want to plant many besos on your baby as you read!

The Going to Bed book cover

The Going-to-Bed Book by Sandra Boynton

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

This is another book worth owning because you will read it again and again and again. It is nearly impossible to get bored of Sandra Boynton's swinging, rhythmic text. The part in which the animals exercise after they have already gotten ready for bed is a pretty accurate depiction of what happens most homes with a toddler! Also available in Spanish.

Gift Books for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Press Here book cover

Press Here by Hervé Tullet

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Words cannot express how marvelous this book is. It's the ultimate interactive book. Each page asks the child to perform an action which triggers an event revealed on the next page. Think of it as a non-electronic app. This is my #1 book recommendation for parents of preschoolers! I give it to every child aged 4 and under.  This book has now become very popula. Tullet has several similar books if the child already has this book.

Tuesday picture book

Tuesday by David Wiesner

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

I have never met a single person who didn't say "I love this book!" Wordless books actually make the best book gifts. They grow along with the child. As kids get older they discover more and more in the illustrations on their own, but when they are younger, looking at wordless books encourages a positive engagement between parent and child. In fact, it's been shown that parents who read wordless books use more complex vocabulary than when chatting about books with text. Wiesner's Tuesday is a classic wordless book, full of humor and mystery.

Z is for Moose picture book cover.

Z is for Moose by Kelly Bingham, illustrated by Paul O. Zelinsky

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

Zebra, in his striped referee shirt (get it?????) is trying to keep the alphabet in order, but Moose is impatient and causing trouble! But that is nothing compared to his disappointment when he finds out Mouse is the one to represent M! A super zany take on the classic alphabet book which draws the reader to reflect on the physical borders of a book.

Hush a Thai Lullaby book cover showing Thai mother hushing and holding baby

Hush! A Thai Lullaby by Minfong Ho, illustrated by Holly Meade

Find it: Amazon | Bookshop

I have recommended this picture book as a gift so many times over the years. After a mom puts her baby to sleep in a hammock she has to hush the sounds around her. Author Minfong Ho writes each animal's onomatopoetic sound and I like that they are unusual to English speakers. For example, the lizard says "tuk-ghaa", the pig says, "uut-uut." The gentle, rhythmic text creates such a lovely lullaby.

Gift Books for Kids ages 4 and Up

All the Way to Havana book cover

All the Way to Havana by Margarita Engle, illustrated by Mike Curato

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

I loved the rhythm of this book! A boy and his family drive to Havana in their car, Cara-Cara. Along the way, the boy takes in all the sights and sounds of the drive, especially the sounds made by his beloved car. The illustrations are wonderfully vibrant. This is a great read aloud choice, too.

I Am Every Good Thing book cover

I Am a Very Good Thing by Derrick Barnes, illustrated by Gordon C. James

Find it: Amazon | Bookshop

Children hear messages from every corner as they grow up. Some may be full of praise, others are sadly critical, or even derogatory and meant to belittle. Caring adults must counteract these negative messages with hope. The reassurance that you are "every good thing" is a powerful and hopeful message for a child. Barnes' text sings loudly to children of their worth, the validity of their dreams and their right to define themselves as they wish.

Book cover for King Arthur's Very Great Grandson

King Arthur's Very Great-Grandson by Kenneth Kraegel

Find it: Bookshop | Amazon

This is a wonderful twist on the knight adventure story. Young Henry Alfred Grummorson sets out to slay a few beasts and meets some very formidable creatures. At least they seem formidable. It just so happens that none of the mythical beasts want to do battle. They'd rather play games, make friends, blow smoke rings, that sort of thing. All in all, though, young Henry still finds it quite exciting. A marvelous story.

On Account of the Gum pink book cover

On Account of the Gum by Adam Rex

Find it: Amazon | Bookshop

Here's a hilarious, rhyming cumulative tale of an outrageous series of events that occurs after a piece of gum gets stuck in a child's hair. It is completely madcap and the illustrations add to the joyful ridiculosity. You may never want to chew gum again. Or maybe you will... just to see what happens.

There you have it. I hope I've gone beyond the typical gift list with my suggestions. Some selections are well-known, others are lesser known gems you will be pleased to discover. Whatever your choice, remember picture books make the most delightful gifts!
