I think that dealing with our own addiction to technology (as parents) is definitely the place to start. Re-connecting ourselves with the 'real world' so to speak. Thanks for caring enough to create such a great resource.

I like these ideas, but I have hardest time enforcing rules when it comes to other caregivers in our home. I work outside the home and everyone else, specifically the Grandparents, who watch my two year old son do not seem to care about or respect my preferences for screen time. They see no problem with it because it makes him happy, but my husband and I have to deal with the fallout later on after they've left. I've tried being assertive by explaining our stance and offering alternatives, but I just don't have the energy to deal with arguments or rocking the family boat. It puts me in a really guilty position...

It turns off the internet for the kids all computers, phones and ipasds the same time every day. Now they have internet four hours every day. Everything is managed automatically. Not difficult to build.

My 5.5yo displays many of the behaviors you stated. He also just began OT services for sensory processing issues, and I know screen time is just not good for him (nor for my 2 yo - but he rarely gets it!). My issue is that I am currently working towards my master's degree, and complete 90% of it online (lectures, assignments, etc.). I cannot cut off my own "screen time" when he is awake at home. Sometimes, I really need to work on something. So, do you have any ideas for helping him go "cold turkey" or at least greatly reduce his time? (he gets max 2hrs a day) I have done timers and prerequisites, even visual/written schedules. He still is angry, antsy, whiny, and unimaginative. He loves to play outside with the neighbors, but if they can't play he is a lost soul šŸ™ I will try the supervised/guided physical activity. Any other suggestions?
Thanks much!!

We should be aware of their own time as parents and monitor our childrenā€™s use. If we replace that screen time with fun, creative or educational activities with our family, we are on the right track to achieving great balance for your family.

We dumped our TV when the kids were little and bought a tiny VCR/TV. It was so small, all the little Von Trapp children didn't fit across the screen when they lined up to sing! This was many years ago. We now have a full-on flat screen, surround sound system, which we enjoy very much. But the habit of being creative and finding things to do with our time stuck.
I think, to be totally honest this is harder for parents than the kids. Kids adapt pretty fast. The lure of an electronic babysitter is strong. I know.
The other idea I really like in your article is writing down the plan. This applies to any change or area of discipline. Again, I'm my own worst enemy. I can hand out edicts till the day is done. But my sanguine nature makes me forget the next day. I learned to post things on the fridge to help with my own consistency.
Thanks for speaking up about a touchy topic.

My son was getting a little carried away with his gaming, and I had set a time limit, but it was hard being consistent with that because I would forget! He's 15, and quite a hermit. Right now he is not allowed to play his games until after dinner and once his homework is done. But I think I need to be a little more strict, especially on the weekends. Thanks for the encouragement!
