You're welcome! I am hoping there are more laugh-out-loud books with a diverse cast of characters in the future. Happy reading.

Thank you for your reply and for your suggestions. I'll be adding them to our To-Read list. I've been searching various blogs and recommendations for a few days now and I'm surprised (or maybe not that surprised) at the lack of diversity in humorous books. Plenty of books that are about every day life or those that discuss issues relating to race, but very few that are just funny for the sake of being funny. Thanks again for your input.

Hi Jennifer, Thanks for your comment! When I made this list a few years ago, I recognized that it was hard to find uproarious books with characters of color! Even when I reached out to others for suggestions I got crickets back. I still have precious few to recommend, but here are a few: Wedgie and Gizmo is hilarious (the illustrations depict the family as multi-racial); The Last, Last Day of Summer by Lamar Giles; Pie in the Sky by Remy Lai (also has a serious theme to it); The Misadventures of the Family Fletcher by Dana Alison Levy; Sal and Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez. All of these made my son laugh out loud. For the youngest kids, most would be a stretch except for Wedgie and Gizmo, and maybe Family Fletcher. I hope this helps!

I’m looking for help finding laugh-out-loud funny chapter books with non-white main characters. I read-aloud to my 6, 7, 8, 12, 14, and 17-year old kids every night and they are most captivated by funny stories. But I’ve recently noticed that almost all of the characters in the books we’ve read are white and I’d like to offer them something more diverse. I noticed that your book list above has mostly white main characters as well.

We’ve most recently read Ivy Pocket, Nanny Piggins, and Stinkbomb And Ketchup Face. I think the only chapter book we’ve read together with a diverse main character is Alvin Ho. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've made a long list of the books I haven't seen yet but so appreciate hearing about.
