I recommend these books as well. I think they fulfill your criteria. Many are very clevver and laugh out loud funny!

If you could suggest a few from this list that would appeal to a newly 5 year old and a almost 9 year old at the same time, that would be wonderful! I love this list! But i find if I choose a book for one child, I lose the attention of the other. Thank you!
