Thanks for sharing your recommendations. I love When You Trap a Tiger! It's on another list and it's a great one! Cilia Lee Jenkins is fun, too!

Cilia Lee Jenkins: Future Author Extraordinaire by Susan Tan (this is a series)
Finding Junie Kim by Ellen Oh (haven't read it yet since it's not out but looking forward to reading it)
When you Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller
Not Your All American Girl by Madelyn Rosenberg & Wendy Wan-Long Shang

Also the year of impossible goodbyes.

I read In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson for several years with my fifth grade class as a novel study. We read the book in the traditional literature circle format as well as read biographies about Jackie Robinson and created a 3-D biography about him. What I loved most about this book, was the conversations that students would have about Shirley. At the time, I was working in a school with many recent immigrant students as well as students from tough situations. They related to her on a level I can't describe. It was beautiful. It just goes to show that a good story, even about baseball, can bring forth powerful thoughts and emotions in children.
