The "Enchanted Forest Chronicles" by Pateicia C. Wrede was a favorite of mine as a young girl. Dragonslomg and magic and plots upon the kingdom, and a strong willed princess who wasn't about to be married off.

I recommend "The Princess in Black" series. She's a princess but also a ninja! My 7 year old son has been reading the series for a year now and they just released the 4th book in the series a couple months ago.
