Having just finished The Marvelous Miss Malone, I wonder if it belongs on this list? As a big Christopher Paul Curtis fan, I was eager to hand this to my 10 year old, who loves female protagonists. However, when she stalled out halfway through, I picked it up to find out why. I found this book to be much more emotionally intense than Bud, Not Buddy. Miss Malone is a fantastic, devastating, and hopeful novel, but I don't think it is lighthearted enough for a Pippi Longstocking list.
