A boy is stranded in the wilderness and kept "company" with a raven.

I always find this a very difficult question to answer. Almost all of the books on this list are recommended ages 8-12 by the publishers. That said, the familiarity with difficult subjects by individual 8 year olds vary. If you are particularly concerned, I always recommend previewing the book before you put it in your child's hands. That said, the "youngest," (for lack of a better word) in terms of "tame" content, books on this list are My Side of the Mountain, The Bears on Hemlock Mountain, and Bud Not Buddy. I'd also suggest Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms, Fort (which does includes bullying of a special needs boy), The Journey of Pale Bear, Will Sparrow's Road are certainly appropriate for an 8 year old. I hope this helps! You can also try the popular "I, Survived!" series if he hasn't read those already.

I'm just trying to keep him in bones at his reading level while not introducing subject matter 8 year olds aren't ready for yet.

I read A Girl Named Disaster by Nancy Farmer as an adult and thought that it would have been a great "girl version" of Hatchet. Have you read it?
