We had a set of board books by Helen Oxenbury (Clap Hands, Tickle Tickle, All Fall Down and Say Goodnight) and each book was basically a short rhyme. These little poems became relevant to activities in our day and it began to feel natural to repeat them in the tub or while pushing him on a swing ("blow a trumpet, bang a drum, wave to Daddy, wave to Mom" or "squelch, squelch in the mud, splish splash rub-a-dub"). These really became our first shared poems. It was such a pleasure to have this reference point together through the joy of words.

I'm so happy I came across u're blog! I like Shel Silverstin for kids because it's playful uses rhyming words that are made up. boys and poetry can be hard to connect but looks like u're doing great!! I like the idea of the peom magnets. do you use cardstock and then go to an office supply store or do you print them at home ?

Thanks so much for your comment! I don't know The Puffin. I'm going to have to look that up.

My granddaughter, now 5, has always had trouble settling down to sleep. I recite Winken, Blinken and Nod, The Owl and the Pussycat, and The Puffin to her at bedtime after stories. Not only can she recite along with me now, but the start of the poems calms her right down and I usually finish alone...if not I just go back to the beginning of the "bedtime poems". It's extremely calming (for us both) and a great tradition. She has other poetry books, but these are our standards.

I'm not a huge fan of poetry, but I want to expose my kids to it. These tips will help me do that!

My pleasure Erica, as I applaud anyone who is promoting poetry. I love walking into a classroom with kids who don't like poetry, and by the time I leave they all have a new understanding of poetry. Those kids who can't read a book can manage a poem. It gives them rhyme, and it helps with word recognition due to that rhyme. Poetry rocks indeed. Twitter where I found your page has connected me with people who share my passion, and that has been a blessing. If it's appropriate to mention, you can check my website at http://www.rainbowpoetry.co.nz where I post some of my poems and write about the work I do. You keep going as the promotion you do is brilliant.
