The Chloe and Nito books are about a girl who uses a wheelchair and her service dog. They are VERY simply written, but can provide a jumping off point to further conversation.

Thank you for your recommendations, many of them I've not heard of. I especially echo the concern that there doesn't seem to be books about kids with disabilities -- learning or physical. I've also written an activist graphic novel, whentherulesarentright.com, and am wondering how I might have your group take a look at it. It focuses mostly on what labor and women have accomplished in this century, and then engages kids to develop their own activism.

I have written a story that teaches children that to give feels even better than to receive called The Butterfly Princesses

Hi Amber, Good question. I actually think most of these books have enough "meat" for a middle schooler, even if the text is not dense. Both the books you suggest, plus Separate is Never Equal, Nasreen's Secret School and When Marian Sang might also be good. I hope that helps. Sounds like you are going to have a very interesting unit coming up!

I was thinking of using either My Name Is Bilal. or Malala as a mentor text for my upcoming Social Justice Unit.

It won the 2016 ILA notable books for a Global Society.

Erica, nice list!

Deborah, this is a wonderful list, the door in the wall was one of my childhood favorites. You might also consider including Sonali, a lovely story about a girl who loved to dance.
